Penzance is good but it has no taste next to this. I do note this is good for something different. I really tried to like the taste, but not being a regular consumer of Latakia, I found that exotic leaf to be simply "over the top" in this instance. There's not much subtle about this blend and it starts like it finishes. I must say that I was surprised at the smoothness of this blend considering its very high latakia content. If Nightcap is Wagnerian, this is a brass band. I foresee lots of Pirate Kake and Star of the East Flake in my pipe smoking future. Mind you, its a good mixture; smooth and heavily smoky. The tobacco seems dry enough when being rubbed out but is hard to keep lit without drying. I have one on hand aging, but will wait for another purchase to get another tin going. So, as an amateur pipe smoker, I have discovered with the help of this blend (and a few others) that I am apparently a Latakia-phile. Hey its not your fault latakia, burley will help you in this kake. This powerful, Latakia laden stuff breaks up easily. They have the Latakia and Burly playing so well t ogether in this blend. It's Latakia in overwhelming amounts. This is a good blend if you really want to know what "Latakia Forward" means. It actually made my neighbor come out and ask if I was burning tires. I will gladly "walk the plank" with this pirate anytime! I knew by the guy who I traded tins with ( He got an old tin from me of Kingfisher ) that it was a full bore Latakia blend, I have to say I am most pleased. I highly recommend it. I enjoy English blends regularly but not exclusively. It joins a favorite list and while it wont be a regular part of my rotation I definitely will smoke it when I need something different in my smoking rotation. Mild nicotine. While I may still prefer some other tinned english tobacs, the price is right for this stuff. The burly and Orientals are there to round it out a bit but the star is the smoky lat. The Burley and Turkish help to smooth out the smoke and add faint delicious undertones, but the Latakia is supremely dominant throughout the smoke, and never falters. Once you puff it very slow it will reveal beautiful oriental spices - peppery cardamom and pine needles - never overpowered and with a nice complexity. I think I smoked PK as regularly and for as long as I did because it does reveal subtle flavor-facets over the course of both a single smoke and repeated smokes. Anyways all I can say is WOW! A velvety, and almost full bodied, smoke with a strong taste of Latakia-woodiness, thats perfectly balanced by the creamy sweet, buttery burley and cavendish. But I give it credit for it?s unique presentation and the courage to produce it at all. It's quite easy to peel off the cake layer and get it ready for smokable condition. Takes a while to get it going. It is far from being monochromatic though, which I will get to in a second. Ive stocked u p on this so i can get the aged/cured effect!! Comes in a crumble cake form, like a dried out brownie. No real complexity here but this is not a blend you sit and ponder over, you know exactly what you are getting and I like that sometimes. Otherwise on its own it lacks body. Words cannot describe how enjoyable a smoke this is. Let tobacco dry out some and keep your pipe cool. Mind you, I don't regret trying itthe tobacco's were good quality, it's just that this blend is not for me. But as you go deeper the Latakia conquers the palate bringing with it an intensely rich, savory and smoky flavor. The smell in the tin is not very very strong. I get some sweetness and flowers at certain moments. PS: I've rated it mild because nicotine-wise it has no perceptible kick.
